Celebrating Your Marriage
at The Half

This year’s Love Ignited Marriage Event is a celebration of marriage at the half. In the Upstate of South Carolina and Western North Carolina—and all across the USA—Middle age couples are busy with an empty nest, restarting the couple-relationship they had before children; they’re caregivers for their aging parents or helping to rear their grandchildren. They are getting ready for retirement or a new career, or they are meeting men's and women's
health issues face to face.

We’re together in this. There’s much to talk about and much to celebrate. Over 70% of married couples today are married to the same person to whom they were first married. That’s despite what the pundits tell you.

This weekend is packed with speakers and breakout sessions designed to encourage and enlighten couples in this mid-life journey.

Featured Speakers: Barrett and Jenifer Johnson
After serving in the local church for 25 years, Barrett and Jenifer launched INFO for Families as a ministry designed to encourage people through speaking, personal coaching and resource development. They have a heart for newlyweds, marriages at mid-life, and parents who want to help their kids enter marriage without a ton of sexual and relational baggage. They have 5 kids, from a married 22 year-old to an active 7 year-old. With 24 years of marriage under their belts, 3 teenagers in their home, and their first grandchild born in 2013, they are an imperfect and ordinary family (like yours) who has truly

experienced it all.

Breakout Speaker: Dr. Jim Goodroe

After spending 24 years in local church ministry, Jim has been leading and mentoring hundreds of spiritual leaders across Spartanburg County for nearly two decades. But his primary leadership role was in the home. He and his wife Nancy have been happily married for 47 years. They raised and devoted their lives to three wonderful boys. But it has not always been easy. He learned a few critical lessons specifically about transitioning to an empty nest and being a godly man during mid-life.

Breakout Speaker: Rick Thomas

Mommy Pick-Me-Ups, Mama Was the Queen of Christmas, and many ghostwritten books. She is Director of Writing Programs for CLASSEMINARS, Inc., the CLASS Christian Writers Conference, and the Carolina Christian Writers Conference. Linda is a wife, mother of three, mother-in-law of two, and grandmother of four children and two dogs so she has many wonderful sources for writing and speaking material. Her greatest joy is spending time with her family.

Candy’s writing provides Biblical insights and practical advice, often on tough topics. Her publishing
credits include hundreds of articles in periodicals such as Focus on the Family, Today’s Christian Woman, Marriage Partnership, Encounter, Pray, The Lookout, The Upper Room, and others. In both areas, our desire is to be a blessing to the donors we serve by minimizing taxes, providing for families and retirement, and substantially increasing charitable gifts.

"Surviving Marriage at Midlife." Introducing the weekend, here’s some empathy for some common issues/struggles, and some "best practices" toward having a thriving marriage during this season. The story of Abraham and Sarah is the biblical jumping-off point. (Things didn't go as they planned, but God used them for big things.)

Stay afterwards to join us for dessert in the Hangar Coffee House!

SATURDAY

7:30 a.m. Coffee and Goodies-

in the Hangar Coffee House - included in your event.

9:00 a.m. Opening Gathering - with Barrett and Jenifer Johnson

"Celebrating the Differences." Here’s a reminder to husbands and wives that your spouse is wired very differently than you...and that's a good thing. This is rooted in the Love/Respect truths found in Ephesians 5:33. It is practical to remind couples of what it looks like in daily life. Our experience is that, by mid-life, many couples have gotten out the habit of meeting their spouse's basic needs.

1:00 p.m. Midday Gathering - with Barrett and Jenifer Johnson

"Fanning the Flames." This is all about keeping the spark alive in marriage with a focus on sexual intimacy. Many Christian marriages are sexless, particularly as they get older. While drive will obviously decrease, we can't afford to neglect this God-given and God-commanded way of connecting husband and wife together. A retreat like this is a safe place to talk about God's design.

Third Breakout Sessions
1. “The most effective thing you can do in your marriage”

– Rick Thomas
2. “When Your Aging Parent Needs Care”

– Candy Arrington
3. “Grandparenting by the Book” – Linda Gilden

5.  "Ten Rules for a Fair Fight" – Jeff Hood

3:00 p.m. Final Gathering -

with Barrett and Jenifer Johnson

“Getting a Bigger Picture of Marriage." A final reminder for couples about all that is stake for finishing strong together. This is important due to the high divorce rate once empty nest arrives. It’s time to focus on your testimony, your legacy, and your opportunities for Kingdom impact during the second half of marriage.
